Bee Shake Down

Yesterday, I braved the bees. I had to literally shake them down to get the rest of the brood into the bottom boxes.

What follows is a video explanation filmed kindly by Sophia. In case you’re wondering, noone got stung. Enjoy!!!

Top hive boxes placed across the property, far from my main hives. There is some honey and nectar still left, so my bees and others from nearby areas, will smell it and come to take it back to their hives. Why do this? We don’t want to attract bees from all over to my hives. They could overcome them and rob them out of any resources as well as bring viruses and mites. That still may happen, but I don’t have to make it easy by putting these near my main apiary. When they’ve cleaned everything out, I’ll put these boxes in storage until I need to expand. I’ll probably use them for honey supers in the future.
